TSS Earnslaw Turns 102
The TSS Earnslaw turns 102 tomorrow,(Saturday, 18th October), the occasion will be quietly marked this year with cake
for all who travel on her.
The iconic old steamer is the oldest original coal -fired passenger carrying steamship in the Southern hemisphere.
Earlier this year 22 tonnes of new hull plating and frames were put in to the mid-ships of the vessel and next year she
will be in the dry dock for the second year in a row to replace plating in the aft peak, as part of Real Journeys
ongoing programme of restoration.
“October 18th is always a reminder of the enormous role the TSS Earnslaw played in the history of this area, both as
the lifeline for the high country stations before the roads went in, and as a New Zealand tourism icon. We certainly
feel a big responsibility to look after her and keep her in top condition whilst always retaining her authenticity,”
says Richard Lauder, Chief Executive of Real Journeys.
Walter Peak has also been given an extensive upgrade over the last year. A large pergola, outdoor kitchen and outdoor
fireplace has been added with a louvre roof that automatically shuts when it rains; enabling guests to stay warm and
enjoy their gourmet BBQ and take in the fabulous views outside - whatever the weather.
