Winners Announced for the Easter Show Olive Oil Awards 2014
The Auckland A & P Association is delighted to announce the winners of the 2014 Easter Show Olive Oil Awards. The Logan Campbell Trophy
and the award for Supreme Champion oil for 2014 go to
Charmaine Maitland and the team at Man O’War Olive Groves, Waiheke Island, for their Frantoio / Leccino blend. Entries this year were of a high standard and the judges awarded 31 medals in all:
6 Gold medals, 14 Silver and 11 Bronze.
Judged on September 18th, the Easter Show Olive Oil Awards is a consumer-focussed national competition featuring oil
from olives grown and processed in New Zealand. All entries must be available for sale here, and must be extra virgin
oil representing production batches of at least 50 litres.
The judging panel, led by leading oils and foods specialist Dr Laurence Eyres, featured olive oil researcher Associate Professor Marie Wong from Massey University, olive oil enthusiast Dr Judy Goulden and highly regarded chef Anton Leyland.
Chief judge Laurence Eyres commented: ‘The oils this year were mostly of a very good standard, having a good balance
between fruitiness, pungency and bitterness. Whilst we felt there were only minor differences between most of the better
oils we were clear as to which were the best’.
Champions in the three major award classes, all Gold Medal recipients, were:
Class 1 Delicate: Koroneiki single varietal - Chapel Olive Oil, Northland
Class 2 Medium: Frantoio / Leccino blend - Man O’War Olive Groves, Waiheke Island
Class 3 Intense: Frantoio / Ascalano blend - Kowhai Close Olive Grove, Waiheke Island
Champions in additional classes were:
Class 4 Infused Olive Oils: Lemon Infused - Oliven am Meer/ Manu Korihi/ Strathview Olives,
Northland
Class 5 Table Olives: Traditional Olives - Telegraph Hill, Hawkes Bay
