Retail card spending rises in August

Retail spending using electronic cards increased by a seasonally adjusted 0.5 percent in August 2014, Statistics New
Zealand said today.
“The hospitality and consumables industries were the main drivers of August’s retail increase,” business indicators
manager Neil Kelly said.
The three largest retail movements in August 2014 were:
• hospitality, up $9.8 million (1.3 percent)
• consumables, up $9.5 million (0.6 percent)
• fuel, down $2.7 million (0.4 percent).
Core retail spending (which excludes the vehicle-related industries) rose 0.6 percent in August 2014.
The total value of electronic card spending, including the two non-retail industries (services and other non-retail),
rose 0.3 percent.
Trends for the total, retail, and core retail series have all generally been rising since these series began in October
2002.
In unadjusted terms, 119 million transactions were made across all industries in August, with an average value of $50.
The total amount spent across all transactions was $6.0 billion.
