Award winners’ contribution makes New Zealand safer and more prosperous
Awards were presented at the Beehive this week to people whose work plays a significant part in making New Zealand a
safer and more prosperous place to live.
Standards New Zealand hosts the Meritorious Service Awards each year to recognise the outstanding contribution that
winning committee members have made to developing the standards that affect every aspect of New Zealanders’ lives.
Acting Chief Executive Michelle Wessing said Standards New Zealand and New Zealand were fortunate to have a number of
experts in this country who are dedicated to making New Zealand a safer, healthier, and more prosperous place to live.
‘This year’s winners exemplify this dedication through their commitment to standards development.’
The winners of Standards New Zealand's Meritorious Service Awards this year are:
• Individual committee members – Peter Browne, Roger Estall, and Garth Gulley
• Committee of the Year – P 4541 for its work on the revision of NZS 4541 Automatic fire sprinkler systems
• The Standards Council Award for outstanding contribution to standards and standardisation – John DeBernardo.
Standards Council Chair John Lumsden said the 2000+ New Zealand technical committee members, along with the
organisations who nominate them to sit on committees, are crucial to New Zealand’s economy.
‘Many of the people who received awards this year have been involved with standards development for decades, but others
are relatively new to the process. What all of the award winners share, however, is a dedication to excellence. Through
their commitment they continuously improve the sectors they work in – electrical, gas, risk management, adventure
tourism, fire protection, and safety.
