Local Barber Raises the Bar in Barbering.
Highly acclaimed Hair Artist and Barber, 28-year old Matt Brown from Christchurch is officially opening the doors of his
first ‘Flagship Barbershop’ on Monday 4th August at 6pm with a celebration launch at Shop 1 & 2, The Windmill Centre, 93 Riccarton Road in Christchurch. The large six chair premises with eight full time barbers
will be the largest operating barbershop in Christchurch and will be open 6 days a week, with 5 late nights to
accommodate demand.
Matt’s aim is to ‘raise the bar’ in barbering and artistry in New Zealand. After spending time travelling all over
America with the best barbers in the business in 2013, he vowed to return home and encourage his fellow NZ barbers to
also ‘up their game’. This meant the talented young barber who started cutting from a shed in Aranui in 2012 had to
recruit and find staff to his standard.
‘I found guys who like me were passionate about the craft and had started cutting friends in their shed’s or garages
because they didn’t know how else to start. I took them onboard and have trained them myself for over a year now in
preparation for this shop. We are honored to now serve the men of Christchurch to the standard I have wanted to for some
time and are each committed to the craft of real Barbering and Service.” Mr Brown says.
Matt’s social media following exploded after a portrait of Tupac he cut was shared by the Tupac official Facebook page
in America. Hundreds of thousands of likes, shares and comments later resulted in many requests from all over the world
for Matt to teach his craft. Having run dozens of sold out tutorials all over New Zealand in 2013 and Australia in 2014,
Matt will use the Mondays the shop is closed to teach ‘The Art of Hair’ with a Barbering Finishing school being
facilitated by him for any stylists and barbers who want to barber at a new level.
Matt’s story is also one of inspiration and overcoming, as a young Polynesian boy who grew up in a home of severe
domestic violence, alcoholism and sexual abuse, he didn’t believe his life would amount to much and after failed suicide
attempts he left home at 15 to find a way to change his life.
“If you told that depressed boy back then that I would one day be a barber who had travelled the world, been on TV and
own his own barbershop on the busiest road in Christchurch I would never have believed you, but yet here we are.” He
says with a smile.
