Pelican Brewery’s Beer in New Zealand
Beer Without Borders is delighted to announce the arrival in New Zealand of the beer of Oregon’s Pelican Brewery.
Pelican is possibly the most decorated brewery ever to export to New Zealand. In 2014 they were named Champion Small
Brewery at the world’s most prestigious beer competition, the World Beer Cup. But this is just the latest in a sequence
of awards for the brewery and their individual beers.
None of this will be a surprise to New Zealand’s beer lovers. Small shipments of Pelican beer reached New Zealand in
2009 and 2012 and were snapped up by specialist outlets around the country.
The beers of Pelican Brewery will be available from the week beginning July 28, 2014. There will be launch celebrations
at Brothers Beer in Auckland on Thursday July 31, Hashigo Zake in Wellington on Friday August 1, and at Pomeroy’s Pub in
Christchurch on August 1.
Pelican
The Pelican Brew Pub opened in 1996 in one of the most picturesque locations possible for a brewery – on the beach at
Pacific City, facing Cape Kiwanda on Oregon’s Pacific Coast. Incredibly, the beer produced by Head Brewer Darron Welch
has done justice to the location and admiration and accolades have followed. Pelican’s core range are in a broad variety
of styles but all are distinguished by exceptional technical quality, leading to a steady flow of awards.
In late 2013 demand for Pelican’s beer led to the establishment of a new production facility in the town of Tillamook.
This increased capacity made it possible for Pelican to consider exporting to New Zealand. And yet the move to a new,
larger facility has had no effect on the quality of beer coming from Pelican, as their 2014 World Beer Cup trophy
demonstrated.
