Te reo Māori videos from Inland Revenue help getting tax right
22 July 2014
As part of celebrating Māori Language Week, Inland Revenue is launching six Introduction to Business videosin te reo Māori.
The online videos will help te reo Māori speaking customers who are involved with businesses and not for profit
organisations to understand their tax obligations.
Inland Revenue’s Whare Ngatai, a Kaitakawaenga Maori who helps meet the needs of Māori individuals, organisations and
businesses, has seen the difference the videos are already making.
“We welcome them; they are certainly helping ensure our Māori communities meet their tax obligations. Having something
visual, with simple graphics and spoken completely in te reo Māori is making understanding what needs to be done, and
how, so much easier.
“We all lead busy lives and the fact the videos can be re-watched, anytime, anywhere is a real bonus. People can quickly
work out their tax, in a language they are comfortable using, compared to just being given a standard booklet to read,”
said Mr Ngatai.
The videos include help for customers wanting to learn more about business structure, record-keeping and expenses, how
to register for GST, and income and provisional tax.
Inland Revenue Group Manager for Customer Services, Eleanor Young says te reo Māori is one of New Zealand’s three
official languages and spoken by more than one in five New Zealanders.
“It is important we make tax easy for all of our customers and offering our online videos to people in their preferred
language is another great step forward.
“We recognise New Zealanders’ have different needs and we are committed to delivering better ways to help people quickly
and easily get their tax right,” said Ms Young.
The videos follow the recent successful launch of the series in English and will also be made available in Korean and
Mandarin later this year.
The Introduction to Business videos in te reo Māori are now available to use on Inland Revenue’s website.
