Consent received for Stratford
23 May 2014
Countdown is pleased to confirm it has received Council consent to build a $15 million supermarket in Stratford that will create up to 110 jobs and engage dozens of local construction workers and building contractors.
Countdown’s General Manager for Property, Adrian Walker, says Stratford is a community the company is keen to employ and invest in.
“We're looking forward to putting together a local team to bring the great value, range, quality and service that Countdown is known for across the country.
“As one of New Zealand’s largest employers, we’re proud to offer flexible working hours for young people and part time workers, as well as fostering career development and training,” says Adrian.
Adrian says the company is excited to start planning the timeline for the new store and to have found a great site in Stratford where the company doesn’t currently have a presence.
“Suitable sites for supermarkets are very hard to come by because of the site access and size that is needed. We’re committed to building a supermarket that will fit in with the community, and we’ve worked hard to put forward a design that will enhance the look and feel of the area around us,” says Adrian.
The resource consent is subject to any appeals but the company is hoping to open the new store in mid-2015. Recruitment information will be advertised in due course ahead of the opening date.
About Countdown

We serve 2.5 million customers every week, and work with more than 1200 food producers and suppliers throughout New Zealand, as well as thousands of independent farmers. We’re committed to being part of the communities we live and work in: some of our activities include the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal, which has raised more than $6.9 million in the past seven years for children’s hospital wards, and Countdown Food Rescue which donates more than $1.4 million of food each year to The Salvation Army and other food banks charity partners, so we can help Kiwis in need.
