Carrello Del Gelato Scoops Ice Cream Awards - Winning Four Awards & Best in Category for Its Feijoa Sorbet
Last night, Wellington-based premium gelato producer ‘Carrello del Gelato’ won four awards for its gelato and sorbet and Best in Category for its Feijoa Sorbet. The New Zealand Ice Cream Award winners were announced at the New Zealand Ice Cream Manufacturers’ Association’s Annual Conference in Blenheim.
Carrello del Gelato won a Silver Award in the Open Creative Category, Gelato and Sorbet, for its Sage & Burnt Butter Gelato; a Gold Award for their Coconut Gelato in the Gelato Category; a Silver Award for their Green Apple & Mint Sorbet (created for Wellington Café Spruce Goose); and a Gold Award for their Feijoa Sorbet in the Sorbet Category. The Feijoa Sorbet was also judged “Best in Category” in the Sorbet Category.
Company founder and chief executive Nathan Meyer said, “Winning awards validates the focus we place on using only the best quality and freshest local products, and creating appealing flavour combinations. Moreover, this is the fourth time Carrello del Gelato has entered the New Zealand Ice Cream Awards and won recognition from the judges.
The Ice Cream Awards were first introduced in 1997 by the New Zealand Ice Cream Manufacturers’ Association (Inc.) to promote and publicise the high standard of New Zealand ice cream. Judging takes place during May at the Massey University Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health (IFNHH), Albany campus, Auckland, three weeks prior to the Association’s Annual Conference and involves awarding points for a number of key attributes in different properties. Appearance is worth 10 points, Body and Texture - 30 points, Flavour - 50 points and Melting properties - 10 points. Gold Awards are given to entries with more than 95 points, Silver Awards to those between 90 and 95 points.
Established 10 years ago, Carrello del Gelato supplies over 80 leading New Zealand cafés, restaurants and food outlets. The company has a national supply agreement with Hell Pizza New Zealand and their gelato is available in New World Supermarkets. Nathan Meyer said, “Carrello del Gelato is dedicated to producing innovative and unique recipes that we believe are unsurpassed. Our range boasts over 100 delicious flavours most of which are gluten-free with the entire sorbetto range being not only gluten-free but diary-free as well.”
