Coromandel ‘sled house’ wins global award
An award-winning ‘sled house’ on the Coromandel Peninsula has added a prestigious global architecture honour to its
already brimming trophy cabinet.
The 40m2 house designed by Auckland firm Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects has won a coveted Architizer A+ award, announced recently in New York.
The house sits on a Whangapoua beachfront section and can be moved around the property or removed entirely in response
to the ever-changing landscape of the coastal erosion zone. All buildings within the zone must be removable or
demountable.
Architect Ken Crosson heads to New York to pick up the award on May 15.
Described by a previous winner as ‘the Oscars of Architecture’, the Architizer A+ Awards are judged by more than 200
leading industry professionals and cultural leaders from around the world. Jurors include representatives from MoMA, the
Venice Biennial, Cool Hunting, Huffington Post and more Crosson says.
“As you can imagine we’re pretty chuffed to win the award for the best small house this year - it delivers a profile for
the firm in a global context but really it’s also a reflection of the standard of NZ domestic Architecture at present.
“And with the likes of United Nude founder, Rem Koolhaas and the co-founder of Kickstarter, the director of Espace Louis
Vuitton Munich and the design editor at New York Magazine on the Juror panel – as well as many other high profile
representatives – it’s fantastic exposure for NZ business and creativity.”
Designed in 2011, the macrocarpa-clad hut is totally sustainable. It is modest in size and uses timber cladding, structure, lining and joinery. It has a worm
tank waste system and separate potable grey water tanks.
Already it has won or been shortlisted in awards in New Zealand, Korea and London including the NZIA New Zealand Award
national for 2012/13 and the NZ Wood Timber Design Award for 2012.
Architizer is a web-based platform that showcases architecture and interior design from around globe. The website has a
wide selection of categories for projects of all types and sizes, and currently has more than 1.5 million visitors a
month.
For the 2013 awards Architizer partnered with the Wall Street Journal and The Webbys to create the A+ Award, the biggest
award programme for architecture in the world with more than 1500 entries from 100-plus countries.
