Hotel DeBrett celebrates fifth birthday this month
Central Auckland's Hotel DeBrett, in its current interpretation, celebrates its 5th birthday this month. The hotel reopened on 2 February 2009, following a head to toe two year redevelopment, which saw the iconic property transformed from a defunct backpackers to a svelte and stylish boutique hotel.
With the philosophy to be a window on to local culture we have worked closely with local artists, producers and suppliers to showcase their products within the hotel, restaurant and bars. Owner Michelle Deery says the hotel is constantly evolving: my intention was always for the hotel to feel more like a home, but with much better service, so like a home, regular tweaking keeps things current. And our fantastic team aim to make our guests feel welcomed and cared for.
Over the years the hotel has received numerous accolades and awards for architecture, design, service and food. We have been rated number 1 hotel in Auckland Central for the last 4 years on TripAdvisor, voted number one hotel in Australasia and 58th in the world by Expedia Insider’s Select List and named best small hotel in New Zealand at the Asia Pacific Hotel awards 2013.
Nestled in our soaring glass roofed atrium, DeBretts Kitchen has also become an established and awarded Auckland Restaurant. Most recently we were named one of Metro Magazine’s top 50 Auckland restaurants 2013. We look forward to continuing our success with Mark Harman, who has recently taken over the role of head chef, at the helm of DeBretts kitchen.
Mark has over 20 years experience working in executive and sous chef roles throughout New Zealand, Australia and the Caribbean. He started his career working with some of New Zealand’s leading chefs, the likes of Peter Gordan of Dine and Sugar Club, Nicholas Watt of Masu Grill, Rex Morgan of Boulcott Street Bistro and Peter Thornley of Wakatipu Grill. Having led his own kitchens for the last 8 years, Mark has received local and international recognition for his creativity. Last year he launched the Seasons Gourmet ranges of soups, which can be found in all leading supermarkets.
When asked about his most memorable achievements, Mark mentions his time at Taupo’s Huka Lodge. There he has presented to the royal family of Holland, participated in the prestigious Famous Five Chefs Dinner, presented at the Moet Chandon Wine and Food Writers Dinner, and not least of all of England.
Changes to the menu will be complete by the end of February, so we look forward to introducing you to our new offering.
