Nelson’s premier jewellers and watchmakers, Benjamin Black Goldsmiths, has appointed Joel Whitwell, a 22-year old award winning Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) graduate, as an artist in residence.
Mr Whitwell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts & Media at NMIT in 2012 and subsequently spent seven months in Auckland in 2013 working on an exhibition to showcase his work after receiving the Masterworks Jewellery Box Award.
Benjamin Clark, Master Jeweller and owner of Benjamin Black Goldsmiths, says Mr Whitwell is an exceptional talent and a welcome addition to the team.
“Joel has great skills, design flare, creative vision and fantastic energy, so we are rapt to have him here for the next few months working alongside us in the workshop,” says Mr Clark.
Mr Whitwell says the residency is an opportunity to extend his knowledge base.
“I met Benjamin a couple of years ago, so this is a chance for me to learn from him, gain experience, and refine my skills,” says Mr Whitwell.
Joel Whitwell, artist in residence at Benjamin Black Goldsmiths, 176 Bridge Street, Nelson, until March 31, 2013.
