Infographic shows how our spending has changed: 40 years of the Household Economic Survey

It is the 40th Anniversary of the Household Economic Survey, which has been measuring how the spending habits of New
Zealanders have changed since 1973.
To celebrate this 40-year milestone, we have produced an infographic that compares New Zealanders’ expenditure 40 years
ago with our expenditure results released today.
Some interesting spending facts show that today Kiwi households spend over twice as much of their total expenditure on
rent, compared with 40 years ago. 40 years ago, Kiwi households spent:
• over three times as much of their total expenditure on clothing and footwear than we do today
• almost a third more of their total expenditure on fruit and vegetables and over twice as much of their total
expenditure on meat, fish, and poultry, than we do today
• over twice as much of their total expenditure on cigarettes and tobacco, than we do today
• a fifth more of their total expenditure on alcohol 40 years ago, than we do today
