City-fringe farm with a history of dairy and cattle grazing goes on the market for sale
A dairy support farm described as being ‘as close to the city as you can get without being a lifestyle block’ has been
placed on the market for sale.
The 185 hectare unit near the township of Waiuku in the Counties region of Auckland is a sheep farm which has been
converted into a cattle and finishing block capable of running up to 650 head of cattle.
The farm is divided into some 40 paddocks and raced for efficient stock movement and separation. This year the farm has
stocked 100 dairy heifer yearlings, 150 dairy heifer calves, 200 beef yearlings and 200 beef calves.
The property is being marketed for sale by Bayleys Real Estate through a tender process closing on October 31. Senior
Bayleys rural sales people Mike Fraser-Jones and Ben Jameson said contour of the land was mixed- with a combination of
lower lying summer paddocks, hillside pasture, and a balance of flat and plateau country.
Mr Fraser-Jones said water across the farm was supplied from a four inch bore supported by a number of dams on the
property. A fertiliser regime of lime, super-phosphate and urea has been spread over the clay loam and ash soils for the
past four years. Supplement of 100 large bales of silage was cut from the property for winter feed this year.
“The boundary fencing is seven wire post and batten while the internal fencing contains both permanent and two and three
wire electric. Native stands of mature totara, pohutakawa and puriri trees provide shelter for stock,” he said.
“Wild fallow deer, common on the Awhitu Peninsula, are often seen on the farm in the native bush stands – which,
combined, total approximately 6.5 hectares.
“It’s as close to Auckland city as you can get without living in the urban limits. Depending on the wind direction you
can see and hear the ‘planes landing across the Manukau at Auckland airport. Yet it’s in the rural heartland of the
highly-productive Counties region.”
Mr Jameson said the farm contained a three-bedroom weatherboard home with double carport. The residence was set in
mature grounds. A four bay implement shed near the house is situated alongside a two stand woolshed - although this had
not been used for many years.
“Mature gardens around the house and yards feature a combination of exotic and native plants and trees, while orchard
and citrus trees planted a generation ago bare seasonal fruit.”
The farm is located a two minute drive from the village of Matakawau where there is a general store, garage and primary
school. Buses to Waiuku College pass the farm gate.
Sitting on the Awhitu Peninsula, the farm is a short drive to the black sand and surf beach of Hamilton’s Gap on one
side, with the outer reaches of the Manukau Harbour on the other side.
