Uber Cool and Relaxed - The Fabric Store Opens in Los Angeles
Renowned New Zealand retailer opens their flagship U.S. store, offering exclusive designer dress fabrics and hand-selected high fashion textiles to the creatives of Los Angeles, USA.
(Auckland, New Zealand) - Long dedicated to providing high-quality contemporary dress fabrics to designers and the creative public in New Zealand and Australia; The Fabric Store has now opened its flagship U.S. store in Los Angeles. Renowned for their incredible range and exceptional customer service, the new L.A. location is committed to providing the people of Los Angeles with exceptional fabrics at the best prices. “We aim to provide an alternative within a fast fashion society where fine craft and high quality fabrics are often undervalued” says General Manager, Jasmine Cucksey. “It’s about editing and selecting a set of fabrics for the customers to enjoy. Our regulars come in to The Fabric Store to get inspired - they consider it a weekly getaway.”
The Fabric Store is a hands-on fabric gallery, with rolls of fabric strategically grouped by colour and type, lining the white walls in modern custom-made maple cubbies. The fabric is never folded but is displayed on bolts that are laid out on tables or stood up right. Aesthetically, the store draws upon industrial design elements integrated with nature through plants and evocative New Zealand art by Robert Trathan and Andrew Barber. Merchandized more like a clothing store, new season fabrics are displayed in edited colour stories. The aesthetic is straightforward and features massive New Zealand pine work tables, an over-sized mirror framed in blackened steel, repurposed metal and vintage baskets for remnants and other edgy and one-of-a-kind interior details. The space also retains unusual architectural details from the 20’s, such as scattered, colourful vestiges of the original hand-laid tile flooring.
With a strong focus on natural fibres, the store has a diverse range of products, including a great selection of quality basics such as cotton, linens, silk chiffon, georgette and satin, wool suiting, coating, as well as specialty fabrics like merino jersey and leather hides. The Fabric Store also carries an incredible variety of designer sample lengths sourced from top fashion designers worldwide, including printed cottons and silks, as well as seasonal, on-trend specialty fabrics such as PVC, lace and embellished pieces, to name a few. Years spent building close relationships with the best designer suppliers’ means The Fabric Store is able to provide amazing fabrics at competitive prices – despite the current skyrocketing cost of high-end fabrics made from natural fibres.
The Fabric Store Los Angeles stocks an extensive range of New Zealand merino wool jersey offering the largest and best selection in the U.S.A. Prized by designers such as Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, Nom*d and Zambezi for its light-weight texture and beautiful draping qualities, The Fabric Store is excited to be introducing this revolutionary, New Zealand made product to the U.S. creative community.
The Fabric Store is highly regarded by costume designers in New Zealand and Australia; and has supplied striking textiles for numerous Peter Jackson movies. The Fabric Store also credits part of its success to a renewed interest in home sewing in a market which has been increasingly dominated by ‘disposable’ fashion. One of the things Cucksey enjoys the most about being involved in day to day store business is seeing fresh faces interested in learning how to create their own style. “More and more people are realizing the ethical implications of buying low quality, cheaply manufactured garments and as a result are rediscovering lost crafts. It’s so wonderful to be able to guide new sewers, and see the pride and satisfaction they gain from creating their own wardrobes, reflecting their own individual fashion sense.” The Fabric Store chooses its staff carefully with sewing and design skills a priority. This ensures customers receive top-notch advice and guidance for the project at hand.
The Fabric Store Los Angeles also offers a range of hand-selected merchandise including the following: a New Zealand line of boutique patterns called’ Papercut’ which boasts an avid U.S. following; Home Sewn, a collection of full scale patterns from 10 leading New Zealand designers; a 100% certified organic fabric cleaner Soap Nuts; Gutermann’s thread made from recycled polyester; and a range of Japanese sewing books in English that each include 16 patterns (with sewing instructions) – highly sought-after for their simple cut and elegant aesthetic.
