Lindauer Leads Lion’s Charge at New World Wine Awards 2013
New Zealand’s most popular sparkling wine wins gold medals at wine awards
23 September 2013 – Lindauer Classic Brut Cuveé, Lindauer Classic Rosé and Saints Sauvignon Blanc 2012 have scooped gold medals at the New World Wine Awards 2013, leading the way for Lindauer Special Reserve Blanc de Blancs which won silver. In addition, following on from its gold medal win, Lindauer Classic Rosé was then named Champion Bubbles.
A record number of entries were received for this year’s New World Wine Awards, which were judged by an independent panel of 13 wine experts at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium in July.
The New World Wine Awards use the same internationally-recognised 20 point system as other leading wine competitions, ensuring that winning wines are the best examples of their type. The only difference is that all wines entered must retail for below $25 per bottle and at least 500 cases must be available for sale. This ensures that consumers are guaranteed access to top-quality wines at affordable prices.
The judging panel, comprised of nationally and internationally-renowned winemakers and commentators, worked in teams of three to complete a two-day blind tasting of the wines. This year the panel was joined by Dr Tony Jordan, a highly-experienced winemaker and judge, as the guest international judge.
Lion Category Director Dave Pearce is delighted with the competition results, acknowledging the work of Lions’ passionate winemakers and viticulturists who consistently deliver exceptional wines that continue to be recognised at the highest level.
“Being awarded 26 medals across both our sparkling and still wine portfolio, including multiple varietals, is a great testament to the consistent, high quality work put in by our teams and supply partners.
“Winemaker Jane De Witt who leads the Lindauer winemaking, should be feeling exceptionally proud of her team who have proved, once again, that affordability does not mean quality need be compromised when it comes to producing sparkling wine.
“Our brands have a rich awards history and having them perform consistently in national competitions that match international criteria will only reinforce to their loyal followers that they are making a great decision when choosing to purchase and appreciate them,” he says.
Other silver medal winners from Lion’s wine portfolio were Corbans Homestead Riesling 2012, Huntaway Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Wither Hills Marlborough Chardonnay 2011, Two Tracks Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012 and Verde Chardonnay Pinot Noir Brut.

Lindauer Classic Brut Cuvée
Lindauer Classic Brut Cuvée is made from traditional Champagne grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, using the authentic method of bottling the wine for its second fermentation - a technique that creates the sparkle and distinctive yeasty flavours. Lindauer Classic Brut Cuvée is full on the palate with a pleasant, steady mousse and elegant aroma. The yeasty and toasty bouquet shows excellent maturity from prolonged bottle maturation on lees. The palate is crisp, complex and well balanced, with a full flavour and lasting taste.
Lindauer Classic Rosé
Lindauer Classic Rosé NV is made from traditional Champagne grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, plus a small percentage of Pinotage, and uses the authentic method of bottling the wine for its second fermentation - a technique that creates the sparkle and distinctive yeasty flavours. Delicate pink in colour, this more full-bodied Lindauer style has a fresh fruit and yeasty nose with a smooth and full palate.
Saints Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Saints Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012 has a generous palate of tropical fruits with current leaf characters and hints of guava. It boasts of lifted aromas of ripe passionfruit and citrus with hints of capsicum and dried basil. Pale gold in colour, this wine shows lovely balance with a crisp, lingering finish
