Beyond Reasonable Drought

Beyond Reasonable Drought
First the long drought, then the torrential rain – farming in Northland isn't for the fainthearted! It takes guts to keep going in spite of the weather, the high dollar, and rising prices.
But it takes more than just guts to make a profit. It takes planning, flexibility, and the ability to assess the profitability of “what if” scenarios accurately and quickly.
In the past a farm's annual financial accounts, probably at least a year old by they time they were completed, were the only way farmers had of deciding whether what they were doing was profitable. That is totally inadequate for today's farm businesses.
Farmers need to be measuring their farm and stock performance daily and making management decisions based on accurate data analysis, says farm business management specialist Peter Floyd. They need tools that will allow them to see their whole business clearly, be firmly in control, and achieve sustainable profits.
Those tools are now available, and will be discussed by farmers already using them at the Beyond Reasonable Drought seminar being arranged by Profit Focused Farming. The farm business management company is holding the seminar for farmers looking for ways to achieve better profits despite unpredictable weather and other challenges.
“There are ways of taking the guesswork out of decision making, even in really adverse circumstances,” says Peter Floyd.
“By taking regular measurements and tying production and financial data together any motivated farmer can use these tools to sharpen up grazing management, work out the most profitable number and type of stock to run, and highlight areas that are costing more than they should.”
“Better decisions lead to higher profits that will enable farmers to achieve their goals for their businesses and their families.”
The Beyond Reasonable Drought seminar will be held this Wednesday 15th May from 10am to 2pm on Evan Smeath's property at Whites Road, Hukerenui 0182, Fonterra No. 12301.
