Food & Grocery Council on Irradiated Tomatoes
Food & Grocery Council on Irradiated Tomatoes
Recently in the media there are have been calls for the mandatory labelling of irradiated tomatoes, creating the impression that mandatory labelling of approved irradiated foods is not already law in New Zealand. This is not correct.
Should New Zealand and Australian Ministers agree to allow the irradiation of tomatoes and capsicums, there is already a mandatory requirement under the Australia New Zealand Food Code (Standard 1.5.3) to label all approved foods treated in this way so that New Zealand consumers are informed. Labelling is also required if the food is an ingredient or component in an ingredient list.
Standard 1.5.3 can be viewed at this website: http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2012C00824
