ANZ job cuts in Australia and New Zealand
Redundancies announced a short time ago at ANZ in Australia follow advice to New Zealand staff of potential redundancies also, the finance workers’ union said today.
ANZ today confirmed plans to offshore 131 jobs, largely from Sydney back offices. The bank says it intends to redeploy about 60 staff, so around 70 workers will lose their jobs.
FIRST Union General Secretary Robert Reid said that last week ANZ met with staff in Auckland to present a proposal to offshore 36 Auckland jobs in Lending Services to Bangalore (with 14 new roles being created).
“In both the New Zealand and Australian cases, these job losses caused by offshoring are completely unnecessary given the profitability the bank is enjoying,” Robert Reid said.
“Questions must be raised whether ANZ still wants to be New Zealand’s ‘national’ bank.”
“In October last year ANZ announced that its New Zealand division recorded profit of $1.265 billion, up from $1.085 billion in the previous year.”
“This is a bank that does very well off New Zealanders, and it should repay some of that custom by committing to keeping jobs in New Zealand.”
Robert Reid said the union was closely monitoring any staffing changes as a result of the closure of the National Bank, following bank commitments last year that staff wouldn’t be losing their jobs as National Bank operations are folded into ANZ.
