Farmers Preparing to Steak Their Claim
Farmers across the country are selecting their entries for the 2013 Beef + Lamb New Zealand Steak of Origin.
The competition to find the country’s most tender and tasty steak is entering its 11th year and is keenly contested nationwide.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand CEO, Dr Scott Champion, says the competition is taken very seriously and winning has become a badge of honour.
“The Steak of Origin rewards farmers for their efforts and showcases the skill in the New Zealand beef farming industry,” says Champion.
All entries in the competition, sponsored by Zoetis, will go through tenderness and quality testing, including tests for colour and succulence, at Carne Technologies to find the semi-finalists.
These entries will then be tasted by a panel of judges to narrow the steaks down to the top 20.
Finally it will be off to the Grand Final and one last taste test to figure out who will be crowned the 2013 Grand Champion at the Beef Expo in Feilding on 13 May.
For an entry form, farmers can visit beeflambnz.co.nz or call 0800 733 466.
The competition is supported by processing plants across the country. These include: AFFCO, AgResearch (Ruakura), Alliance Group Ltd, Auckland Meat Processors/Wilson Hellaby, CMP Kokiri, Land Meat NZ, Silver Fern Farms, Taylor Preston/Ken Wilson Meats, Taranaki Abattoir.
