TITLE: NZIFDA: Thousands of farmers owed up to $5,800 of duty refund on off-road farm petrol.
Thousands of farmers and contractors are owed money on fuel used by off-road farm vehicles – and should make a claim
before they miss out.
An average dairy farmer who spends $5,000 per annum on off-road petrol will get an excise duty refund of $2,900 per
annum.
Almost any commercial off-road fuel usage includes an on-road tax (or duty) of up to $0.58 cents/litre that can be
refunded back to the farmer.
Fuel duty refunds can be backdated for up to two years and the refund can be quite significant.
But the process to obtain a refund is complex and your application will be rejected if the application is not correctly
presented.
NZIFDA (www.nzifda.org) provide an entitlement guide to work out if farmers are owed a refund.
If eligible, farmers can open an account with NZIFDA (this costs $55+GST) and lodge a claim. From here, NZIFDA’s helpful
and friendly staff will work to gather the information needed to support a claim and file that claim with the NZTA.
NZTA pays NZIFDA directly and claims are paid out on the 5th of each month following, less the NZIFDA processing fee of
12.5%+GST.
Farmers need to visit www.nzifda.org to work out if they are entitled to a refund, apply for an account, and lodge their refund through NZIFDA.
