Are Kiwi Bosses Holding Us Back?
The skills of New Zealand bosses lag behind and act as one of the drags on the economy. Only 26% of employees are engaged. 28% are actively disengaged. 46% are merely ‘present’ in that they show up and do no more than they’re told to. Employee engagement is directly correlated to engaging with customers.
By unleashing the secrets of the brain in the workplace, leaders will be able to develop an engaged and high performance workforce. Author Terry Williams, has written ‘The Brain-Based Boss’ to help all leaders, from those who work at the coal face to those at senior management level, to achieve those objectives.
Based on five proven principles of brain science, ‘The Brain-Based Boss’ is a book of practical workplace-ready tools for leaders who want to motivate their staff to motivate themselves and to contribute to their own personal and professional success.
Written in a user-friendly and engaging style, ‘The Brain-Based Boss’ aims to teach leaders how to encourage their staff to: exhibit greater self discipline; develop a growth-oriented mindset and a goal focussed approach to their work and to spend a greater proportion of their working day in an optimal productivity state of “flow”.
Williams’ 2nd book ‘The Brain-Based Boss’ is out December 15th. The book is directly targeted at workplace leaders from first-line / first-time supervisors up to genuine top-of-the-heap leaders It’s being published by Thomson Reuters who have significant business credibility internationally. It’s available now for Christmas as an executive ‘stocking-stuffer.’
While it is a serious book about adding value to businesses through employee engagement, a angle of human interest is that, in addition to being a trainer / speaker / author on the subject, Williams is also a professional stand-up comedian. His show 'The Grin Reaper' has just been accepted into the 2013 NZ International Comedy Festival. So it’s a serious book but very accessible, entertaining and memorable, as was his first book, ‘THE GUIDE: How to kiss, a get a job & other stuff you need to know.’
Terry’s background is in corporate training and people management. He has a BA in History from Canterbury University and a Post grad Diploma in Business Administration majoring in Management from Massey University.
Author of THE GUIDE: How to kiss, get a job and other stuff you need to know, that book has been acclaimed as a plat¬form for people to positively influence the young people in their lives.
As seen on TV1’s Good Morning and TV3’s Sunrise, Terry Williams combines humour with valuable business acumen to be a skilled and knowledgeable trainer, speaker or facilitator.
Terry consults to many New Zealand businesses in delivering frontline leadership training and strategic planning. His business card sometimes says Business Navigator which reflects his approach – train¬ees often already have the answers; what they’re missing is the ability to move in the same direction, the right direction.
Before starting his companies seriouspeople Limited and seri¬ouscomedy Limited, Terry worked in the financial services, gaming, telecommunications and local government sectors in training as well as operational and customer service management. Being a manager and business owner enabled him to have a greater involvement in broad¬er organizational development but you’ll see the spark of passion in him when he’s in front of the room helping learners learn and, even more importantly, transferring that learning into practical, tangible and measurable results in the workplace.
Terry’s point of difference as a speaker is that, in addition to his business experience and knowledge, he has also been a professional stand-up comedian for ten years. Often he’s entertaining or hosting corporate events and conferences for clients such as Sony, Mercedes or the NZ Dairy Industry Awards. Consequently Terry’s business presen¬tations are engaging. Appropriate fun reinforces the learning.
Terry Williams trains, speaks and facilitates across the Asia-Pacific region and recently spoke to an HR Summit of 4500+ in Singapore. He is based in Auckland, New Zealand. He has two teenage children and challenges himself to do two dangerous things a year. (That’s how he got into stand-up comedy.)
