Success for Rapaura Springs
A Marlborough pinot gris crafted to meet the market has been judged best in its class for the 2012 vintage at the
Winestate Wine of the year 2012 finals, held in Adelaide.
The Rapaura Springs 2012 Pinot Gris was awarded a 4.5 star rating in the competition, and judged runner up in the Pinot
Gris/Grigio class, as well as best in class from the 2012 vintage.
Owner Brendan Neylon says the wine, which took gold at the New Zealand International Wine Competition earlier this year,
was made to appeal to lovers of fresh, easy drinking wine.
“In our quest to be market driven, we brought in a Master of Wine and spent time working with retailers such as Vintage
Cellars and First Choice in Australia, to make sure our style offers what customers want.”
Mr Neylon says Pinot Gris is becoming an important variety for the company, with a strong Australian market and
increasing interest in New Zealand and the UK, with a Pinot Grigio style being developed with a new UK distributor.
Judges Michael Cooper, from New Zealand, and Peter Simic and Stephen John, from Australia, tasted nearly 1000 wines in
the variety.
