2degrees hits 1 million customers
By Hannah Lynch
Aug. 7 (BusinessDesk) - Two Degrees Mobile, the newest entrant in the mobile phone market, has continued to grab sales from bigger rivals Telecom and Vodafone New Zealand, boosting its market share to one million customers.
In three years the Auckland-based company has taken over 21 percent of New Zealand's mobile market, with a third of the company's customers bringing their 021 or 027 numbers to the network. 2degrees now serves the business market and is one of the approved government providers.
“More than a million New Zealanders have made it clear they wanted choice and competition in the market," Eric Hertz, chief executive at 2degrees, said in a statement. "Competition is bringing down prices and increasing the range of devices available."
2degrees has more "simple innovation" up its sleeve, Hertz said, "it's just about getting people to feel more comfortable about using their mobile."
Vodafone had 2.4 million customers as at Dec. 31, down from 2.434 million at the end of October, according to its London Stock Exchange-listed parent’s quarterly statement, while rival Telecom had about two million customers.
