Media Release

Strong Start to the Year

New passenger car sales of 7,499 units were the highest monthly total since 2008 and the second highest monthly total since the MIA records began in 1975.

Commercial vehicle registrations are still feeling the impact of stock shortages resulting from the Thailand floods and recorded 1,182 registrations which was up on December 2011 but down on the previous January figure of 1,1313.

“The new vehicle industry has had a very strong start to the year which hopefully is an indication of things to come” said Mr Perry Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association. “Members and their dealer networks will be happy with these numbers.”

For the month, Toyota recorded 1,740 passenger car registrations giving it just over 23% of the market. In second place was Holden with 794 registrations (10.6%) with Hyundai in third position with 780 registrations (10.4%). In the commercial segment Toyota continues to dominate with 237 registrations, followed by Nissan (157) and Ford taking third position (132).

The Toyota Corolla was the number one top selling passenger car (828 registrations) followed by the Suzuki Swift (382) and the Hyundai i30 (312). The Nissan Navara took first position in the commercial segment with 144 registrations, followed by the Toyota Hiace (132) and the Ford Ranger (95). The Toyota Hilux was in an unusual fourth position, with 89 registrations.
