Saint Clair Pinot Noir Trophy Wine At Marlborough Wine Show

MEDIA RELEASE 20 SEPTEMBER 2011

Saint Clair Pinot Noir Trophy Wine At Marlborough Wine Show

Of the 46 wines judged to be “excellent” from a total of 424 entries, there were only 19 grand trophies up for grabs at the inaugural Marlborough Wine Show 2011 celebration dinner held on Saturday night at Marlborough Vintners Hotel. Saint Clair continues to excel, winning the Champion Pinot Noir 2011 and 2010 trophy with the Saint Clair Pioneer Block 14 Doctor’s Creek Pinot Noir 2010. This is the third trophy this year awarded to Saint Clair Family Estate for the Pinot Noir varietal.

“Pinot Noir is a challenging variety, but that is what makes it even more rewarding when you get it right,” says Saint Clair red wine maker Kyle Thompson, who was at the presentation evening to collect the trophy.

“Saint Clair has such a strong international reputation for producing top quality Sauvignon Blanc, and now Pinot Noir is also showing its colours and putting Saint Clair on the global stage.” Kyle can see Marlborough Pinot Noir going from “strength to strength”.

In addition to the Champion Pinot Noir 2011 and 2010 trophy, several “Excellent” awards were given to Saint Clair wines – Saint Clair Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011, Saint Clair Pioneer Block 10 Twin Hills Chardonnay 2010, Saint Clair Pioneer Block 16 Awatere Pinot Noir 2010, and Saint Clair Pioneer Block 22 Barn Block Pinot Noir 2010 all achieving this honour.

Saint Clair has spent a number of years refining winemaking and viticulture techniques with the Pinot Noir varietal. 2011 is the best level of success that Saint Clair has ever seen, a result achieved by dedication in both the vineyard and the winery.

“We are very pleased the judges are rewarding the elegant and complex wine style of the Pioneer Block 14 Doctor’s Creek Pinot Noir 2010. It’s a style we embraced for this wine from year one from our Doctors Creek Pinot Noir vineyard,” says consultant winemaker Matt Thomson.

The family-owned Marlborough winery is proud of its achievements, and feel this is not only great recognition for Saint Clair Pinot Noir, but also for Marlborough-produced Pinot and the New Zealand wine industry as a whole.
