Maple leaf found in Olive Grove
Getting excited about the rugby world cup took on a new meaning at Telegraph Hill Olivery this week. Their olive business has turned over a new leaf - the maple leaf of Canada.
Telegraph Hill wanted to choose a second team to support at the Rugby World Cup in Hawke’s Bay. It took a lively debate at a lengthy staff meeting to decide on Canada.
Telegraph Hill has a lot similarities with Canada says owner Geoff Crawford, “they have oil we make oil, their country colours are red and our company colours are red, and they are local, well with two games at Napier they are as near as locals!’
“This gives us a chance to see them play two games in the Rugby World Cup where we can be vocal in our support of their team” says Crawford
Telegraph Hill have had some fun with creating a new product specifically for the tournament. Maple was one of the key food flavours they kept coming back to when thinking of Canada, so the challenge was how to mix sweet maple and savoury olive.
The answer was simple: use maple wood chips in the smoker. “We sourced some maple wood chips to put a Canadian twist on our smoked olives. Instead of using our regular Manuka wood chips to smoke our olives, we have used imported Maple wood chips. The flavour result is a sweet smoke with tones of golden syrup and honey cured bacon. It is quite different to our current Manuka smoked olive which we are known for around the country”, says Crawford.
The Maple smoked olive has a specific label with the maple leaf clearly visible so these olives will be easily recognised as something special by visitors to the Olivery.
So it's two months of Canadian themed olives at the Olivery, with free tastings of all products including the Maple smoked olives. With Canadian flags, products and posters Telegraph Hill have created a home away from home for Canadian tourists and locals who want to support Canada.
