New Zealand’s Young Vegetable Grower 2011

New Zealand’s top young vegetable growers will be going head-to-head next week for a chance to win the title of NZ Young Vegetable Grower.

The four men from Canterbury, Ohakune, and Auckland will be competing against one another for the title.

The day-long event will involve several elements, all testing essential skills that a successful vegetable grower needs to run a business, including: tractor driving and ploughing, grading vegetables, assembling a pump and writing a marketing plan.

Graham Martin, the competition coordinator, says the competition gives young horticulturists an opportunity to showcase their skills outside of the normal work environment.

“This competition helps Horticulture New Zealand promote excellence within the industry and makes for a really interesting and fun occasion.”

The winner will compete for the prestigious title of Young Grower of the Year against the Young Fruit Grower during the annual Horticulture New Zealand Conference in Rotorua on the 25th of July.

This is the fifth Young Vegetable Grower competition since the inaugural competition in 2008. This year’s competition will be held on Thursday, 12 May just outside Christchurch. The event runs from 9am to 3pm. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

The winner of New Zealand’s Young Vegetable Grower wins a trip to Australia to visit vegetable producers there.
