An entirely new dining experience has been successfully launched in the ski resort town of Methven this winter.
Iconic Canterbury ski area Mt Hutt hosted the first of a series of public dinners last Friday night (2nd July), aptly named ‘Dinner with the Stars’.
Ski Area Manager David Wilson said more than 50 people came to the first dinner in the cosy Huber’s Hut and said it would be “a highlight” of any visitor’s ski holiday to Methven and Mt Hutt.
“Visiting the ski area at night is such a spectacular experience for guests with our unique night time alpine atmosphere,” he said. “We received fantastic feedback from our inaugural dinner which was held on a calm evening under beautiful starry skies.
“Guests just loved seeing first hand an insight into what happens on the mountain at night and the amount of activity going on. Rides in our snow groomers and on the skidoo were a big hit, and for the youngsters, sled rides with huskies were a huge highlight - the huskies were on their best behaviour.”
By day the Mt Hutt restaurant serves hearty breakfasts and lunches to thousands of hungry skiers and boarders but the atmosphere and menu changes for the night time dinners.
Guests at the first dinner were treated to an alpine degustation menu that included delights such as house-cured Southland salmon with a zingy salsa, oven-roasted Highland beef with caramelized vegetables and a pinot, shallot and blackberry glaze, and Tarte Tatin with pistachio nut brittle, French vanilla bean ice cream, fresh berries and Riesling sabbayon. Local wines had been expertly matched with each course.
“Everyone was blown away with the quality of the food,’ said Mr Wilson. “Even we can’t wait to see what food our chef will dish up to impress guests each week.
“Word has obviously got around as to how great the dinner is, as bookings have been flooding in since Friday’s launch. We strongly suggest people plan and book ahead if they want to come up here.”
A ‘Dinner with the Stars’ can be for a special occasion dinner for a group, or simply a night out with a difference. Tickets start at just NZ$80 for an adult and $55 for kids and include transport from Methven to Mt Hutt return as well as dinner. Numbers are restricted to 80 people per night with bookings taken on a first in, first served basis.
