Many residents in Waihi are heartened by response to a new website that points out a raft of facts about gold mining in the town that refute the negative myths and misconceptions that are reported in mainstream media – especially since the release of the government’s discussion paper that suggests some parts of the Coromandel be removed from Schedule 4 protection.
“I’d like to thank the many people who have made contact with us to seek information on the issues around the current Schedule 4 debate,” says Newmont Waihi Gold’s external affairs manager, Kelvyn Eglinton. “We have recorded a significant increase in traffic to our website and received many emails. We welcome the interest and the feedback. We are heartened that such a broad cross section of New Zealand is seeking to access information, gain an understanding and enter the debate in a balanced and considered way.”
With reference to the newly-established website anotherview.co.nz, Mr Eglinton is pleased this avenue is another way to spread good news stories and positive viewpoints. “Just as it is important for New Zealanders to scrutinise what we do and how we do it, we believe that it is important to question the most radical claims made in the media by those who oppose the mining industry.”
Newmont continues to invite people to site to show them what modern mining is all about, rather than have them rely on outdated information. People react to fear and uncertainty – another reason New Zealanders should debate the issue as widely as possible and be open to another view.
