Chemetall New Zealand acquires Tergo Industries

MEDIA RELEASE
9 MARCH 2010

Chemetall New Zealand acquires Tergo Industries

Chemetall New Zealand is delighted to announce its acquisition of Tergo Industries, New Zealand’s long standing manufacturer of industrial chemical products and processes.

The purchase marks the first time that Chemetall, one of the world’s leading suppliers of surface finishing, aerospace and industrial products, has had a manufacturing presence in New Zealand since starting business there in 1998.

Mr Joe Den Tandt, Chemetall New Zealand Manager, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Tergo into the Chemetall fold. We have long seen great synergy between Chemetall and Tergo’s high quality products, outstanding customer service and ethical culture and values. This integration of two distinguished businesses will ensure customers throughout New Zealand will have direct access to the worlds’ leading technologies supported by local New Zealand manufacturing and technical services.”

All sixteen full-time Tergo positions have been retained and Chemetall looks forward to welcoming additional team members as the combined expertise of the two organisations allows the company to grow and expand. The five existing Chemetall New Zealand staff will now move from their current home in Penrose, to the Tergo Industries site in Avondale.

Tergo Industries began life in 1946 under the Auckland Gas company, before being purchased by Demi Holdings Group Ltd in 1987. Current General Manager Ray Walker, who bought the company in 2004, will continue in his current role for the time being, before eventually moving into a consultancy role.

On the acquisition, Ray Walker said: “This is an exciting new chapter in Tergo’s history. The world renowned expertise that Chemetall brings to the table will allow us to continue our tradition of constant improvement and our customers will benefit from exciting new product and technological developments as we move forward. I’m personally looking forward to working with the Chemetall team in our ongoing mission to provide New Zealand customers with the outstanding products and services they have come to expect from Tergo.”

Tergo Industries has operated out of its premises on Rosebank Road in Avondale, Auckland since 1997 and has representatives nationwide. The company has additional warehouses in Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin and resellers exist in major regional centres including Hawkes Bay, Nelson, Taranaki and Rotorua.

Chemetall’s large technical base and financial support will be of great advantage to Tergo Industries’ existing customer base whilst Chemetall customers will benefit from Tergo’s top class manufacturing and laboratory facilities.

This is an ideal union, thanks to the abundance of similar products in the two companies’ ranges. The acquisition also means that Chemetall New Zealand will now boast a number of additional products including environmental cleaners, a rust convertor primer and an even more comprehensive industrial cleaning product range. Chemetall brings to Tergo improved aerospace products, its conversion coating technology and products for defence applications with international approvals.

Having started business by using bi-products of coal gas to manufacture a variety of chemical products, Tergo Industries employed a number of industrial chemists throughout the fifties and sixties to conduct research and development that would help broaden its product range. As a consequence, Tergo was able to begin creating new products specifically for the military, marine, aerospace, transport and food industries.

Tergo’s ethos has always been to develop products that are based, where possible, on natural raw materials, are safe to use, fit for purpose and provide value for money whilst having minimal impact on the environment.

Chemetall New Zealand is a subsidiary of Chemetall GmbH based in Frankfurt Germany.
