Statement from RIANZ
Re: S92A Copyright Act
The Recording Industry Association of New Zealand welcomes the release by the government of its cabinet policy paper relating to S92A of the Copyright Act.
RIANZ is pleased the government has shown its intent and commitment to dealing with the illegal file sharing activity that is crippling our creative industries.
However, RIANZ is concerned the proposal as framed will not fulfil the government's good intentions.
The process outlined in the policy paper appears to be time consuming, burdensome and expensive for rights holders. RIANZ’ key concern is that, in practise, it may not provide a viable alternative to taking action through the courts pursuant to existing provisions of the Copyright Act 1994.
RIANZ will consider the first draft of the bill, expected to have its first reading in February 2010, and will then prepare submissions to the commerce select committee.
