Queenstown construction company spreads its wings
A leading Queenstown construction company has spread its wings to complete the second stage of a new commercial centre
in Central Otago, on time and on budget.
Rilean Construction, renowned experts in managing challenging and high profile commercial builds in the region, has just
completed its first commercial build in the heart of Cromwell’s growing industrial district.
The five-unit CromTrade building, on a prime site on the corner of Barry Avenue and McNulty Road, is already fully
tenanted with Rilean delighted to have been involved with some of the fitouts.
Rilean Project Manager Craig Clark and four full-time staff plus a team of up to 40 subcontractors started work on the
project in March.
“It’s a solid tilt-slab building with grooves for nice architectural effect and to help delineate the different
businesses within the building,” he said.
“As lessees were signed up we also took on interior fitout work and were able to work with the client and lessees to do
it as the building was being built, which meant they could take over their premises earlier.
“We also accommodated tenants’ changes and improvements to their particular premises as we went along, a very
interactive process.”
Mr Clark said Rilean had been fortunate to work with many Cromwell-based subcontractors for the first time.
“They were great to deal with and the quality of the work they produced was such that the inspector from the Central
Otago District Council was ‘blown away’ with how good it was and signed everything off first time.”
Johnny Stevenson of Property Company Town Pier Ltd said they were delighted to confirm that Rilean would proceed with
building the next stage of the Cromtrade development, known as ‘Block C’.
“As we try to design the buildings to meet as many of the tenants needs as possible before the concrete is poured, we
like to talk to potential tenants as early as possible. Rilean’s flexible approach helps us deliver purpose built
premises in a cost effective manner.
The purpose-built trade park is designed specifically for trade services, wholesalers, transportation operators, small
manufacturers and commercial retailers as an affordable trade-based environment for non-competing businesses offering
complimentary products and services.
Rilean Construction, established 22 years ago, recently won the Tourism and Leisure Project Gold Award and the
Commercial Project of the Year Award for its work on a $13m renovation of the Novotel Queenstown Lakeside hotel. The
awards were for the Southern Region of the Master Builders Association.
Current projects include the redevelopment of Queenstown’s iconic and historic Mountaineer building on behalf of
developer Westwood Group Holdings, and the Kawarau Falls development for Melview Developments.
