Long-awaited new holes come into play at Millbrook Resort
Golfers at Queenstown’s Millbrook Resort are polishing up their drivers and working on their short game in anticipation
of the long-awaited opening of four new holes at the five-star resort.
The four new holes will officially open for play to members of the public this Saturday November 29, although Millbrook
Country Club members will be able to play them the day before as part of a regular ‘Members Friday’ match.
The new holes, designed by former golf pro turned course designer Greg Turner, are part of a new ‘Coronet Nine’ course
being developed at Millbrook West, a $500 million residential and golf course lifestyle development.
The new holes are being brought into play as four holes from the original Bob Charles-designed 18-hole course are taken
out of play for extensive re-configuration and realignment, meaning golfers will play this ‘hybrid’ course for the next
12 months.
Millbrook Property and development Manager Ben O’Malley said the relatively ‘young’ holes were still in their maturing
phase, being only a year old, but time and some extra TLC would see them come into their full glory to test golfers of
all levels.
“Golfers will definitely notice the difference with firmer greens, that all conform to United States Golf Association
specifications, wider fairways, dramatic contours to negotiate, and be taken by the new 16th tee (the 2nd tee of the
Coronet Nine) which is the highest in the resort with fantastic views,” he said.
Trevor Kerr, chairman of the members committee, said members couldn’t wait to get out onto the course.
“They’re very excited about the new holes, this ensures that the Millbrook experience continues to rate among the best
in the region and New Zealand.”
Designer Greg Turner said the new holes, all on the western side of Mill Stream, featured stunning backdrops and would
be the equal of anything in the country.
“It will be great to see members and visitors alike having the opportunity to get a little taste of what is in store
when the full Coronet Nine and remodeled holes for the Arrow Nine come into play,” he said.
“While the essence of Millbrook won’t change, these new holes will bring a whole new layer of strategy to the course.”
When all the golf course work is complete, there will be three interchangeable nines – the Remarkables Nine, Coronet
Nine and Arrow Nine – in play for the 2010 season.
