Cuisine Wine Country 2009 - the definitive guide for terroir-tourism
Cuisine has launched the 2009 edition of Cuisine Wine Country, the definitive wine and food lover's bible and essential guide for those venturing to New Zealand's 13 wine regions.
Featuring profiles on a bumper 390 plus wineries, Cuisine Wine Country 2009 also profiles each region's best artisan food producers, farmers' markets, wine and food festivals, winery cellar doors, and vineyard cafes as well as other eateries and unique places to stay. Wineries offering tastings by appointment and online/mail order options are also included.
This beautiful, yet practical, 290-page collector's guide is the ultimate go-to guide for any one venturing to New Zealand's wine regions and comes with easy-to-follow maps for each region's cellar doors.
"In New Zealand each wine region's personality is becoming more sharply defined and distinctive, something we have tried to capture in Cuisine Wine Country 2009," says Cuisine wine editor Susan Buchanan. "Each regional section includes the key elements of the visitor experience that can be discovered by Kiwi and international travellers alike."
The French word "terroir" is the sum of all the factors a specific environment brings to a wine, making it of that place and nowhere else. It can be extended to describe the distinct local characteristics of regional produce. Cuisine Wine Country gets to the heart of this sense of place, making it the indispensable terroir-tourist's handbook.
"Wine is a great connector," says Susan. "In a region such as Nelson, for instance, it would have been impossible to appreciate the winemaking community without mentioning the artistic community with which it is so intertwined. At older Hawke's Bay wineries such as Mission Estate and Church Road, the place of wine in the region's history is commemorated.
"It is this growing integration of wine and community that is a particularly strong feature of the 2009 edition of Cuisine Wine Country, one we are happy to highlight and support."
Cuisine wine writers John Saker and Kerry Tyack explored every vine-clad corner of New Zealand. Lauraine Jacobs has provided an in-depth update on regional foods and farmers' markets, eating establishments and places to stay.
The regions covered include Northland, Matakana, Greater Auckland (incorporating Kumeu Wine Country and South Auckland), Waiheke Island, Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa/Martinborough, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, Waipara and Central Otago.
Available from all good bookstores, supermarkets and winery cellar doors for RRP $17.50 from Monday 10 November 2008. Visit www.mags4gifts.co.nz to order online.
