Hangi for success

Hangi for success
UCOL Wairarapa is marking the approaching end of a good year with a hangi celebrating student success.
Maori Student Support Coordinator Michelle Coley says the hangi – on tomorrow at the UCOL campus - is about the success of staff as well as students. She says ticket sales support that broader view. “We decided on 150 tickets at $5 each and they’ve all sold in record time. So we can tell both staff and students feel it’s been a year worth celebrating.”
Either that, she says, or it’s the opportunity for a great value feed. “For $5, people get three kinds of meat – mutton, chicken and pork, plus potato, pumpkin, kumara, stuffing and mixed vegetables. There’s steamed pudding, ice-cream and cream for afters.”
Michelle’s son Clinton is putting down and managing the hangi, watched closely by an audience of children from UCOL Wairarapa’s child care centre, UCOL Kids.
Michelle says the children have been learning about protocol at the campus marae and for many of them, tomorrow will be their first experience of a hangi.
Campus Manager Angela Hewitt says the hangi is a well earned treat after a hard working year for both staff and students. “Now we’re working on making next year even better, with brilliant new Sport, Nanny training and Performing Arts programmes on offer.
“It all depends on student enrolments,” she says. “To succeed (and get a slice of the action at next year’s hangi) you have to first sign up for a programme!”
