NZ Transport Agency Announces Motorway Alliance
The NZ Transport Agency today launches an innovative alliance to better manage Auckland's motorway network and improve
driving conditions for people using it.
"There are examples of motorway alliances overseas, but the Auckland Motorway Alliance [AMA] will be by far the biggest
of its kind in New Zealand responsible for operating and maintaining some of the busiest and most critical sections of
road in the country," said Roly Frost, the NZTA's General Manager Network Operations.
"The NZTA has established the AMA to help travellers get to their destinations comfortably, safely, quickly and
reliably," he added.
The 10-year contract will enable the AMA to deliver enhanced value for money in line with NZTA objectives, and to be
customer and stakeholder driven, Mr Frost said.
The alliance will operate on SH1 from Orewa in the north to Pokeno in the south; SH16 from central Auckland to Westgate;
SH18 from the Greenhithe Bridge to Albany Highway; SH20 and SH20A; and SH22 to Pukekohe.
It will take over the operation and maintenance of the new motorway projects on completion like the Northern Gateway
Toll Road.
Alliance responsibilities include highway repairs, environmental management, and cleaning graffiti and clearing rubbish.
It is not responsible for,
• Structural maintenance of the Auckland Harbour Bridge
• Operation of the NZTA Traffic Management Unit, including the ATTOMS traffic control centre at Northcote
• Planning and long-term strategic planning of the transportation network
• Design and construction of motorway upgrades and extensions
Alliance partners are the NZTA, Fulton Hogan Ltd., Beca Infrastructure Ltd., Opus International, and Resolve Group. The
NZTA is also the client of the AMA as owner of the State Highway network.
"We want to leave a lasting legacy with our neighbours alongside the motorways and with drivers of the network that is
dependable and better," Mr Frost said.
