Kiwi Company Provides Cyber-slacking Solution
Auckland, NZ, 25 September 2008
Many CIOs and CEOs were shocked by recent reports into the levels of cyber-slacking in the workplace and the data showing that over 25% of workers time is spent online for personal reasons. With the workforce becoming more technology savvy it is becoming more and more important to find effective ways for companies to monitor network usage, make adjustments to improve efficiency and productivity, and mitigate the risk of its misuse. Enter New Zealand IT security company Mako Networks.
“The solution we have developed gives companies complete visibility and the ability to monitor, control, and protect their networks remotely via the internet.” says Mako Networks CEO, Bill Farmer. “With an increase in security issues over the past 8 years due to a growing remote workforce, and the high incidence of cybercrime and cyber-slacking, businesses are realising that they need much stronger controls on their networks. That’s where we come in.”
Mako’s monthly reports and remote access mean that business owners can login at any time from any internet connection and see how their network is being used. Managers using the Mako system are able to view the usage for every computer in their network and get a listing of the most visited sites either by individual computer or across their whole network. Once armed with this information it’s easy to limit or ban access to sites that are causing concern.
Proactive alerts are another feature of the solution. If something unusual is happening with the connection, such as virus or worm activity, automatic alerts let clients know immediately so that they can address them before they become a security, productivity, financial, or legal issue.
The Mako system has had particular success in the SME and health sectors where many companies do not have dedicated network staff, and the ease of use and functionality of the system come into their own. Detailed, easy to understand monthly reports provide business owners with a clear picture of how their internet connection is being used and areas where they can take action.
“Business owners like the system because you don’t have to be an IT professional to use it. This means that they are able to get a real understanding of what’s happening on their networks and develop an effective way addressing specific issues to do with security or internet misuse.”
The unique nature and cost effectiveness of the solution has helped Mako to take the system international. Partnerships with telecommunications companies such as Telecom New Zealand, NetComm in Australia, Vodacom South Africa, and a strong reseller network have seen Mako Networks grow significantly since its first product release in July 2003. With global internet usage increasing the demand for solutions like Mako offers is not likely to slow in the foreseeable future and further international growth plans are already in place.
