Interislander Ferry Arahura On Her Way Back From Major Refit
Interislander Ferry Arahura is on her way back from her major refit in Singapore. The refit will see her as a Cook
Strait ferry able to offer high standards of travel for several years to come.
Work has now been completed including the facilities to cater for more large vehicles, such as commercial vehicles and
the larger camper vans which are increasingly crossing the Cook Strait between New Zealand’s North and South Islands.
The improvements included changes to the lower decks, new truck driver facilities and reduction of some upper deck
accommodation. Drivers will also enjoy more turning space and a wider entrance and exit.
In the passenger areas, a new comfortable cinema and bar / cafeteria have been completed, plus revised open areas from
which to view the Marlborough Sounds on a journey described as a ‘visual sensation’. Arahura is expected back in
Wellington on the 12th September. She will then undergo final Maritime New Zealand certification before re-entering
service.
“We have been delighted with the progress of this major project,” comments Seamus O’Sullivan, Group General Manager for
Interislander. “Adding to the refit with a more luxurious Club Class lounge and upgrading carpeting and upholstery in
more of the ship, while making sure everything is completed to our exacting high standards, has only added a small
number of days to her expected return which is a credit to all concerned.”
Once ready to return to service, many items held in storage will be reloaded such as crockery, cutlery, galley equipment
and seating. The new commercial drivers lounge will also be equipped.
The Maori greenstone and wood carvings, created when Arahura first entered Interislander service and held in careful
storage in Wellington during the refit, will also be rededicated to the ship in a special ceremony.
