All Black Dan Carter to open shop in Auckland
An Auckland business association is delighted that its lobbying to get All Black Dan Carter to set up shop in its area has paid off.
It has been confirmed today that Carter and his business partners will open their third Gas Clothing store in early October in Newmarket’s trendy Nuffield Street.
“This is a huge boost for Newmarket’s status as the fashion capital. Dan Carter is the biggest name in New Zealand sport and arguably the most stylish. We will be welcoming Dan and his business partners with open arms to Newmarket,” said Cameron Brewer, general manager of the Newmarket Business Association.
Carter and his business partners have already opened Gas clothing stores in Christchurch and central Wellington.
When the Wellington store opened in October 2007, Brewer paid Carter's business partners a visit and told them while the political capital was fine they also needed to be in Auckland's fashion capital.
Carter agreed and engaged the Newmarket Business Association to help find the perfect spot.
“We put the word out there and the response we got from agents, property owners, and businesses was overwhelming. Every leasing agent wanted Dan on their books and every business wanted Dan in their building.”
GAS, which imports high-end denim wear from Italy, was keen to be among other trendy fashion stores and so considered the likes of Newmarket's Broadway, Teed and Osborne streets before settling on Nuffield Street. In Christchurch GAS operates from property developer Dave Henderson's very trendy South Of Lichfield inner-city precinct. In central Wellington, Gas Clothing is in Mercer Street.
Brewer said the timing of Gas’s opening, right at the beginning of the coming summer season, is perfect.
“It has been a long and cold winter for many retailers. Having Dan Carter show his confidence in Newmarket is a very positive signal. It also confirms that Newmarket is now the preferred address in Auckland for top apparel stores, leaving the CBD and anywhere else in the dust.
“In the past fortnight alone Newmarket’s had Hugo Boss open its first store in New Zealand, fashion designer Karen Walker announce her show for Air New Zealand Fashion Week 2008 will be held in Newmarket, and now the biggest name in New Zealand sport is setting up shop. This is a huge coup for Newmarket,” said Mr Brewer.
