MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE MEAT INDUSTRY ACTION GROUP [MIAG]

Meat Industry In Farmers Hands
MIAG’s objective is the formation of a farmer controlled, market led, National Champion – a company that has 80% of red meat procurement, processing and marketing to get the critical mass needed to improve farmer returns.
The Meat Industry Action Group (MIAG) is holding a series of meetings throughout New Zealand to explain the resolutions it will put forward to the shareholders of two major farming co-operatives - Silver Fern Farmers and Alliance Group Limited.
MIAG spokesman John Gregan says it is crucial for the industry to approve a process to achieve meat industry consolidation.
“Farmers need to hear an unbiased view of where the industry should go. It is imperative that shareholders of both cooperatives have a complete understanding of the issues the meat industry faces so that they can make a more informed decision,” he says.
“Whatever option the shareholders choose could determine the future of our industry forever so we are challenging farmers to take ownership of these issues so that they and following generations have a secure future,” he added.
The first meting is in Blenheim on Sunday 24 August.
