The Langham’s Afternoon Tea Fit for a Father
(Auckland – 21 August 2008)
Father’s Day at The Langham, Auckland will feature a tailor-made, limitless afternoon tea for the lucky father or grandfather attending on Sunday, 7 September.
An especially created afternoon tea, available for Father’s Day only, will cater for the gentleman with a healthy appetite and be served to all fathers present.  The afternoon tea stand will include roast beef and mustard sandwiches, spiced tandoori chicken wraps, egg and watercress rolls, champagne ham, aged cheddar and pickle club sandwiches. This will be followed by bacon and cheese scones with herb mayonnaise butter and topped off with custard squares, double chocolate éclairs and pecan tarts. A choice of signature teas or a complimentary house beer will also be served as part of this Father’s Day feast, if desired by the father present.
The Langham’s signature afternoon tea is a well established institution in Auckland and acknowledged as one of the most elegant and sophisticated of dining occasions.
Food and beverage manager, Alastair Mead, says that the luxurious ritual of afternoon tea was created in 1840 by Anna Russell, 7th Duchess of Bedford, who served it to ward off hunger pangs in the long hours between lunch and dinner.
“However, not wanting to overlook the Duke of Bedford’s possible contribution in the evolution of afternoon tea – imagining perhaps the Duchess sought his male opinion on her new innovation - we wanted to celebrate Father’s Day with this bespoke afternoon tea focusing on the tastes of the fellow of the house,” says Mr Mead.
Not to be outdone by the special Father’s Day menu, the signature Langham afternoon tea will be available to all other guests on the day. This consists of petite scones, smoked salmon pinwheels, tomato, cucumber and egg sandwiches, chocolate-coated tuxedo-dressed strawberries, fresh fruit tartlets, lamingtons, English fruit cake, and spice cake accompanied by crème fraiche, strawberry preserve, butter, and of course, tea and coffee.
The Father’s Day afternoon tea event will take place at The Langham from 12 noon – 5pm on Sunday 7 September only and will cost $30.oo per person. The Father’s Day afternoon tea includes a complimentary house beer if desired, as well as a choice of signature teas.  All other guests dining with the ‘father of the day,’ will be offered The Langham’s signature afternoon tea.  In order to attend, reservations must be made and can be done so by calling 09 300 2885, noting the Father’s Day menu request.
