Hot Chips Back On The Menu For Healthy Eaters
Delicious hot chips, traditionally a taboo for health conscious New Zealanders, are making their way back into a healthy
diet in a new significantly reduced fat form. A unique cooking appliance now allows gym junkies and busy families alike
to enjoy these tasty treats at home with only three percent fat.
New Tefal ActiFry is a revolutionary way to make a wide array of food with minimal oil, including seafood, meat and
vegetable stir- fries and even desserts. Hot chips for a family of four can be prepared with only one spoon of oil, 100
times less than that used in a traditional deep fryer.
This ground-breaking cooking method is sure to please dietitians watching obesity rates in New Zealand rise. The way
meals are prepared is just as important in limiting fat and kilojoule intake as the types of food eaten, and a vital key
to controlling a range of major health issues.
The Tefal ActiFry can be used with a variety of heart-friendly oils to ensure that the small amounts of fats that are in
the food are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats essential for a balanced diet.
Nikki Hart, Nutritionist and TV Presenter for her own nutrition TV series ‘Eat Yourself Whole’ and ‘The Fat Chance’,
said 65% of children surveyed in the inaugural New Zealand Child Nutrition Survey reported eating deep fried potatoes
such as hot chips, french fries and wedges.
“The Tefal ActiFry is a fantastic cooking appliance allowing families to prepare a variety of tasty meals, including
crispy hot chips, with less fat. This is a healthy alternative to deep frying,” said Hart. This is especially good news
for ‘potato-loving-New Zealanders’ considering that 2008 has been named the ‘International Year of the Potato’ by the
United Nations!
“Low saturated fat intake is fundamental for the prevention and management of health conditions such as obesity, heart
disease and diabetes,” said Hart
Tefal’s Country Manager Darryl Brown said that 10 years of research by Tefal’s team of cooking technology experts have
gone into the development of the ActiFry.
“Our scientists designed an exclusive heat pulse system to create a sharp rise in cooking temperature to make the crust
on hot chips form more quickly, resulting in less oil being absorbed. This method is a clever and healthy way to cook
all sorts of delicious meals with a reduced fat content,” said Mr Brown.
