Trip to Countdown for Milk Results in $2.9 million Win
A trip to the supermarket for milk has resulted in a $2,997,140 Big Wednesday win for an absolutely delighted extended family from Auckland.
The father of the family made a quick stop at Papakura Countdown last week for milk when he made a spur of the moment decision to buy a Big Wednesday ticket for his family syndicate.
"I don't normally buy Big Wednesday for us, but had some change so thought I would spend $6 on getting a lucky dip for the family.
He realised he had bought a winning ticket when the checked his numbers at home after the draw. "I must have checked that ticket 1,000 times, I could not believe my eyes," he said. The father then had the job of sharing the news with other family members – who initially did not believe their eyes either.
"It just shows $6 can buy you a lot at the supermarket", one family member joked.
The family travelled to Wellington today to claim their prize and landed in very windy and rainy conditions. The winning ticket was safely kept in the mother's handbag for the trip.
"When I listened to the air hostess explain the evacuation procedures on the plane, and they got to the part about leaving all luggage on the plane – I thought there is absolutely no way I am leaving my handbag on this plane, " the winning mother said.
The family members now plan to take some time to think about what they want to spend their winnings on. But one item is top of the list.
"I am going to buy some new carpet for my house," said the mother. "That will be my big treat," she said.
Big Wednesday's First Division has been struck an amazing seven times this year, and this is the third time the Big Wednesday top prize package has been won in the past two months. The winning ticket was sold at Papakura Countdown and has won a total prize package worth $2,997,140 made up of:
- $2 million;
- an Aston Martin V8 Vantage;
- an Audi Q7;
- a $250,000 American Express Platinum card;
- a $250,000 luxury travel package;
- and a Rayglass Legend 2500 boat.
