MEDIA RELEASE 3 July 2008
Television Advertising Revenue increases for June half
Television advertising revenue for TVNZ and TV Works has increased by 3 % for the six months ended 30 June 2008,
compared with the same period last year. Despite the slowing economy, television advertising revenue remained strong
during this period and is expected to continue throughout 2008.
Popular programming schedules on both networks providing stability of viewing audiences helps explain these strong
results. Television programmes, such as Dancing with the Stars, Star’s in Their Eyes on TV ONE and Shortland Street,
Greys Anatomy and Desperate Housewives onTV2 and 3News, House, Boston Legal and local shows such as Moneyman on TV3 and
American Dad on C4, have helped attract and maintain audience loyalty throughout this period.
TVNZ’s Head of Advertising Sales Dave Walker comments “FTA television delivers cost efficient mass audience reach which
is recognised by the strong support from our Advertising Partners in the first half of this year. We are confident of
their ongoing support off the back of a very strong programme line up for the second half of 2008 including the Summer
Olympics Games from Beijing in August”.
TV Work’s Director of Sales, Colin Caldwell, said, “We have seen this before, when the economy toughens many of our
clients see it as an opportunity to invest additional funds to maintain and build market share and with a strong
schedule planned for the 2nd half that includes Outrageous Fortune, Lipstick Jungle, NCIS and a good investment in local
shows we expect this to continue”.
The reported figures are sourced from returns prepared by Television New Zealand (TV ONE and TV2) and TV Works (TV3 and
C4).
