Meridian Takes Home Two Top Property Council Awards
Wellington’s Meridian Building has won the Commercial Office category and the overall Green Building Award at Property
Council New Zealand’s Awards 2008. It is the first building to achieve New Zealand's occupied and operating 5 Star Green
Star rating.
“Property Council New Zealand is thrilled to see more and more of our Members taking up the challenge of developing and
retrofitting buildings to achieve a Green Star rating,” said Connal Townsend, Chief Executive, Property Council New
Zealand.
The building has a range of environmentally sustainable features, including close proximity to public transport and
city facilities, and building materials that maximise natural daylight and rainwater harvesting. Not only does the
building reduce its eco footprint over the lifecycle of the building, but is a great place to work.
"This is a natural progression from our focus on renewable electricity generation. As the leader in the field of
environmentally-friendly electricity generation, it is appropriate that we put our money where our mouth is, making the
best use of all our resources, including accommodation," said Dr Keith Turner, Chief Executive of
Meridian.
“We are really proud of the fact that the first building to receive the New Zealand Green Building Council’s five-star
rating is in Wellington – and it fits with our vision of becoming the world’s first ‘green’ capital city, ” said Mayor
of Wellington City Council Kerry Prendergast. Auckland’s Smales Farm, Sovereign House constructed by Mainzeal
Construction received a Merit in the Property Council Green Building Category.
