Wot's a Baby Moon?
Expecting couples book in a break before the water does
AUCKLAND – 17 June 2008: Everyone has heard of the Baby Boom and the Honey Moon – but it’s the rise of the Baby Moon that’s sweeping the nation, according to online accommodation website Wotif.com.
Wotif.com New Zealand Manager, Tania Witheford has noticed the trend of couples taking a break before their bundle of joy arrives, through feedback from the website’s many accommodation partners.
“Several of the properties I liaise with have reported an increasing number of couples checking in for weekend and week-long breaks with a baby bump on show.
“The most popular deals with these expecting couples are those that include pampering for the mum-to-be,” she added.
Expecting New Zealand couples realise that their romantic weekends away are numbered and are hitting the road in droves for some quiet time alone together.
New Zealand mum-to-be, Tamara Finlay and her husband Drewe recently took the opportunity to escape their dairy farm in Hamilton, 27 weeks into their pregnancy.
“Before I got too uncomfortable to sit in the car, we headed off on a trip covering the Northern and West Coast of the South Island - although the frequent toilet stops were still a bit of a pain for Drewe.
“We wanted to do something before the baby arrives, and got some great deals by booking it all the week before we left on Wotif.com,” she added.
With their busy schedules leading up to the baby arriving, and 280 baby calves also about to be born on their farm, Tamara and Drewe waited for an opportunity to get away and took it.
“I wanted to see a part of New Zealand that I hadn't yet seen and I loved the excitement of planning at the spur-of-the-moment and hunting around on Wotif for bargains.
”The place we stayed at in Franz Josef in particular was a $300 room that we got for $125 a night, that was the most expensive room we booked and it was a bit of a treat for us, the place was gorgeous,” said Tamara.
