Winners of environmental excellence awards announced

Leighton Works were one of the major winners at this year’s joint Auckland Regional Council and New Zealand Contractor’s
Federation (NZCF) Environmental Excellence Awards.
The winners were announced last night during the NZCF Auckland branch’s annual general meeting.
The awards, which are sponsored by Shell New Zealand, recognise and reward environmental excellence for organisations
that achieve best practice in the field of environmental management of civil construction and related projects.
Leighton Works was the overall winner in the over $10 million category for its environmental management of the state
highway 20 to state highway 1 Manukau Extension project.
Auckland Regional Council Stormwater and Sediment Manager Roger Bannister said the motorway project was not only
technically difficult but also required a lot of environmental planning because the new motorway crosses a number of
streams.
Hick Bros Civil Construction won the $2.5 million to $10 million category for its work on the Millwater subdivision
project in Silverdale North. It was a major subdivision project and there were many environmental factors to take into
consideration because it was next-door to the Orewa estuary, said Mr Bannister.
HEB Construction won two categories, the $500,000 to $2 million category for work on the Karaka Harbourside project in
Hingaia and, the less than $500,000 category for managing the Orere Stream Protection Works project in Manukau.
Mr Bannister said the Karaka Harbourside project, a large sub division, was a challenge because it was nearby to a
sensitive environment.
Orere Stream Protection Works project at Orere Point was technically complex because HEB Construction had to divert a
stream to build a rock wall to protect the road from being undercut by the stream, said Mr Bannister.
Auckland Regional Council Environmental Management Committee Chair Dianne Glenn said: “It’s pleasing to see that
industry leaders are continuing to set high standards.”
NZCF Auckland Branch Chairman Fraser Wyllie said this year’s entries were outstanding so it was a difficult decision for
judges.
The Auckland branch of the New Zealand Contractor’s Federation (NZCF) and the ARC launched the Environmental Excellence
awards in 2004.
