Wellington tops National Tourism Growth
Tourism continues to grow in Wellington according to Statistics New Zealand figures released today.
The figures were influenced partly by Easter falling in March this year but Wellington visitor numbers still grew
strongly against declines across the country overall.
Wellington guest nights were up 18,000 or 8% in April compared with the same time last year against a 4% decline in New
Zealand overall. Wellington had the greatest regional increase in the country and was the only region to record higher
international guest nights.
“These figures show the increasing importance of tourism to the Wellington economy,” said Chamber CEO Charles Finny.
“They also demonstrate that Wellington needs more accommodation space and increased infrastructure investment if it is
to meet its full potential as a tourist destination.
“The lack of caravan park and camping ground type accommodation in Wellington City is a particular weakness.
“Wellington had the highest occupancy rate at 63% compared with 52% nationwide. This shows how much potential growth
remains,
The Karori Sanctuary Visitor and Education Centre unveiled yesterday is a welcome addition to Wellington’s tourism
infrastructure. It will attract even more visitors to Wellington and will bring substantial economic benefits to the
city,” Mr Finny concluded.
