Sommelier Success For The Grove
Michael Dearth Announced as Sommelier of the Year
Michael Dearth, founder, owner and sommelier at renowned restaurant, The Grove, has been announced as this year’s Negociants NZ Outstanding Sommelier at the 2008 Lewisham Foundation Awards.
Michael, who is a trained sommelier, was awarded for his excellent knowledge of wine, broad understanding of new and old world styles, his ability to create a well balanced and interesting wine list, and to communicate this knowledge and enthusiasm for wine to the customer, enhancing their dining experience.
“The fun part is creating a wine list that gives people new experiences with wine, offering the opportunity to try new varietals and to provide new wines that complement Sid’s dishes,” says Michael.
Michael works closely with Head Chef, Sid Sahrawat (who won the Outstanding Chef of the Year at the Lewisham Awards last year) to create ideal food and wine matches.
Michael continues, “Each time we create a new menu, we open all the wines and take the time to figure out what wine works best with each component in the dish. Sid pushes boundaries in food, which gives me room to open up new wine avenues for our diners.”
Continuing to source wines from around the globe, Michael is always searching for the perfect wine (with the right price point) to offer his guests.
“Right now, my favourite wine is Château du Cèdre, made with 100% Malbec grapes from the 2004 vintage, from a region called Cahors, south of Bordeaux. This wine is an ideal match for Sid’s delicious creation of milk fed veal loin with potato beignet, escargot and saffron.”
Delighted to be recognised for his passion and what he does, Michael comments “I love food, wine and people, and I am very lucky that I make a living with all three!”
Great atmosphere, outstanding food, and an award-winning sommelier, there is no reason not to visit The Grove. Visit www.thegroverestaurant.co.nz to view the full menu, or call (09) 368 4129 to make a reservation for a magical dining experience in Auckland city.
